Ridgway Community Garden completes its second year this autumn. Located in downtown Ridgway on land donated by local property owner Liza & John Ortman, the garden is open to all community members; children of all ages and folks with special needs. We are under a 501(c)3 umbrella, and all donations are tax deductible.
We use 300 square feet of our garden for veggies & fruits. We grow tomatoes, tomatillos, peaches, blackberries, rhubarb, peppers, beans, peas, and a variety of other leafy greens and trial vegetable oddities. Emphasis is on heirloom varieties of all of these plants, which we find tend to produce the best home-grown flavors and color. This also makes it possible for us to collect the seeds for next year's garden for ourselves and our friends.
The rest of the garden is actually our former front and side lawn. in 2007, we tore out all of the dying grass and weeds and put in a xeric cottage garden. Most of the plants are grown from seeds or plants given to us by friends, family and neighbors. To our delight, our garden has also become home to many birds, butterflies and bees since we tore out the lawn. We are also happy that we are now using 1/3 the water we used to use for our old lawn for 10 times the visual impact.
